( 17 days and 15 nights total)

Be sure to read the "daily schedule" carefully to find out why this tour is so special.  We explain  what we do in great detail so you can make the right decision about which tour is best for you.

This tour goes to some of the prettiest and most historic areas of Italy.  We begin by spending three nights in Rome where you can visit the  Vatican Museum (Sistine Chapel),  St. Peter's Basilica, the Coliseum, Roman Forums, the Pantheon and the beautiful Piazza Navona.

Our hotel is located in Trastevere, just across the Tiber from ancient Rome. This older (yet trendy) neighborhood is like a little village tucked into the center of  Rome. It is where the Romans go to eat and socialize on weekends. We love it because you  get a feeling of  being absorbed in Roman life while  staying  there.  You'll see. We think there's  no other place like it inside Rome. We' think you'll agree!

From Rome we head north stopping at Civita Bagnoreggio for lunch and a brief visit. This town was built on a hilltop by the Etruscans and prospered until in the 1600's when it's footing collapsed leaving only a small town with no access. The long  abandoned town is now accessible to those who cross a pedestrian bridge that rises up to its only remaining portal.   We'll stop for a few hours so you can explore what remains on this amazing hilltop.

We have a surprise for you...

The next two nights we've planned a special  surprise for this tour. After we leave the highway that goes north from Rome we'll drive on an small  road that  wanders haphazardly through the countryside with grape vines on each side. Finally we come to an opening and find that a tiny village has sprung up around an ancient stone farmhouse.  Our small van couldn't be an inch wider and still be able to squeeze through the archway carved into the ancient wall  that is the only way into the courtyard in front of our hotel.  We'll probably notice some of the few residents who live there stretching their necks to get a peek at us. ( If you wave they give a welcoming wave back. ) Once we enter the hotel's unassuming front door, we'll find comfort and style in a home that has been turned into a four star hotel. It has a delightful restaurant that specializes in Umbrian recipes. the charming rooms each have their own personality. You'll enjoy a delicious breakfast where homemade jams, breads  and honey are offered. Alessandra runs the hotel and restaurant while, Sergio, her husband, oversees the vineyard and wine making.

We've  asked that they prepare  dinner for us the next two nights and we'll also be treated to a tour of the family wine cellars that go deep into ancient Etruscan caves below the hotel.
                  DRIVEWAY.jpg

Next morning after a late breakfast and when you can tear yourselves away from our  amazing hideaway, we'll drive to nearby Orvieto.  This city was founded  by the Etruscans 700-900  years before the Romans became powerful. It is perched high on volcano rock with views into the Umbrian countryside.  Once there  you'll see one of the most amazing Cathedrals outside Rome. Its exterior glistens with intricate and breathtakingly beautiful mosaics. Inside there is a chapel painted by Signorelli that is said to have inspired Michelangelo.

We hope that you will take a guided tour of  an Etruscan cave. It provides a fascinating view into the ancient yet brilliant civilization that preceded the Romans by nearly a thousand years. There is also a small Etruscan museum in the center of town - a larger museum awaits in Volterra.

Since we'll be in town on the day of the weekly street market you'll be able to shop and find some great bargains. Orvieto is the place to buy ceramics if you want  to compare many styles and types.   The streets are lined with ceramic shops.

When we leave our Umbrian " farmhouse hotel"  we'll drive into pristine Tuscan countryside along the famous "wine road of Tuscany". We'll stop for a visit in Pienza and then head off for lunch at  a Pecorino  cheese farm. At our included lunch featuring a tasting of pecorino cheese and wine we'll see a demo showing us how its produced. Pecorino cheese is a necessity for Italian cook.  It is right "up there" with olive oil and garlic.

We'll  visit several villages during our five days in Tuscany. We'll stay in both Montalcino (small hilltop wine town) and Volterra (ancient hilltop city of the Etruscans)  before we arrive  in Florence. To find out more about these five days in Tuscany check out our daily schedule.
See the daily schedule for this tour

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance. There you can walk in the footsteps of Michelangelo.  You'll be able to admire his "David" in the spot it was meant to be and in the gallery designed to display it. Shopping in Florence is a dream. Whether you prefer the famous designer shops near our hotel or bargain shopping in the enormous street markets that surround it, you'll love shopping there.

For our final three days we'll be in Venice. Composed of  117 islands and over 400 bridges Venice sets the stage for the grand finale of this grand tour of Italy.

We hope you can join us!

Piazza Navona is timeless. Once the site of chariot races for the Caesar, it is now a lively and integral part of life in Rome. This is truly one of the world's great people watching places.

Below: Piazza Santa Maria - in Trastevere -  This is the oldest fountain in Rome! Believe it or not, Emperors used to flood this piazza and recreate sea battles..

A Unique "Slice of Life" in the
Most Ancient part of Rome...

Cinzia and her son Roberto await us with a friendly welcome at our Roman style hotel in the center of Trastevere. Our "home" in Rome is a cozy and simple hotel. Unlike big groups that would never fit in such a small hotel, you'll be able to get a taste of Rome most tourists miss.

The hotel is just around the corner from Piazza Santa Maria - pictured above - one of the most popular night spots in Rome. People gather here from all over Rome every evening to have dinner and to watch street entertainers. The  winding streets that surround the piazza are full of great little restaurants and boutiques.

The church has some of the most beautiful mosaics in Rome. This neighborhood is a "slice of Italian life".

STREET MARKETS

We'll spend a day in Orvieto when their weekly street market is open. Thesemarkets aren't just for the tourists although we certainly enjoy them. (Jill especially loves the beautiful Mediterranean table cloths.) The markets are an important part of the local economies and have been going on for hundreds of years. Vendors  go from town to town selling fresh meats, vegetables and other housekeeping necessities.  There is even a traveling drug store!

You may have already heard about the fabulous street markets in Florence.  There are bargains in leather, purses, silk, tapestries etc The Florence markets are more directed toward  the tourists than the ones in Orvieto.  You'll need to leave room in your suitcase for the treasures you're sure to find.

You shouldn't rush through
such a beautiful country.
Slow down and do it right with...
Larry and  Jill

Larry & Jill Tour...
  • Being in a small group allows the luxury and convenience of traveling in eight passenger vehicles  that can drive up windy narrow roads into the very center of the tiny hill top villages.
  • Personalized - Whether your day is  filled with an outing to the Vatican, visiting art museums or churches or you choose to simply sit on the Spanish Steps and wonder at the amazing nonstop vibrancy of Rome -you choose. We help you achieve your  goals for this visit to Italy
  • Being in such a small group (16 people maximum) means you won't get "lost in a crowd". You will be treated on an individual basis. For singles traveling in large groups that means it is "easier to get left behind". In our small groups we have never known that to happen.
  • We travel at a relaxed pace so you can take in the landscape, dally over a leisurely meal or "shop until you drop". We stay at each destination longer and we spend as little time in the vans as possible.
  • The hotels we choose are in historic and central locations - close to everything.  Our small vehicles get you "close-in". We avoid the inconvenience and wasted time involved in unnecessary "bus time" that can't be avoided when hotels are located far from the  historic centers and, of course, the places that you want to spend your free time.
  • The people who own and staff the hotels we've chosen for you have become our friends over time. For us returning to each hotel is a little bit like returning home. This warm feeling carries over to you. We hope you'll feel that our friends in Italy are your friends. They want to make your visit to Italy  a happy experience that you'll always remember.
  • Since we are a small group, you can really enjoy your meals! We enjoy small and charming restaurants and a freedom of choice that is not possible in large groups.
  • In the evenings before dinner we love to get together with everyone in informal gatherings at the hotels.
  • You will probably feel like you are with a group of friends long before we reach the end of the tour! Being away from home with a group of like minded intelligent people tends to help friendships flourish.
  • Take part in special themed meals and wine tastings. We make dinner reservations for our group every night but you are always free to make your own choices as to when and where you have dinner. You may want to go off on your own for a night on the town once, twice or every night. It's up to you! We usually reserve two tables of  eight so its easy to carry on conversations.
  • We'll always answer your questions promptly. You may choose to communicate with the others who'll be on your tour before we meet in Rome.  We enjoy exchanging pictures over the Internet before we meet  so we can spot each other as we arrive at the hotel.
  • On the first day of your tour you'll receive an Information Packet with interesting and informative details about the places we'll visit and  maps for every town. As your departure date gets closer  you'll receive additional information from us by email.
  • Luggage handling where available. All luggage handling & tips are included in the cost of your tour. (You must be able to move your own luggage. However if it is necessary, this will only be for  a short distance and never up long staircases.
  • We go on every tour. Therefore, we are just as interested as you are in making the tours are as much fun and well executed as possible. We look forward to doing things a little differently each time - making little changes to fine tune every  tour.
  • Since we are the owners of  Larry & Jill Tours we can be flexible and  act quickly to  make sure that each tour fits the mood of the group and meet unexpected challenges smoothly  and effortlessly.
  • Our goal is to have fun as we  provide a tour that exceeds your expectations!

Tell us what you are interested in and how you like to spend your time ... we’ll  customize  your experience and make sure you  get to do  exactly what you want to do!
